difficult conversations training courses – be a tackler not a dodger ™

Various course options

difficult-conversation.jpg

In the twenty first century, difficult conversations are everywhere.

Whether we’re at home, at work or in a social situation, unwanted subjects can be suddenly raised which demand you to do either one of two things.

to tackle the conversation or to dodge it.

The Difficult Conversations training course and handbook have been launched in response to a growing demand from managers requesting help to prepare for situations they are facing.

The ten practical steps will help you understand that difficult conversations do not need to be as daunting as they appear, and will highlight the benefits that managing difficult conversations can bring to you as an individual, and to your organisation. The ten steps will teach you how to build confidence and skills in having and managing difficult conversations, still achieve business objectives and keep important relationships intact.

The Difficult Conversations training series has been developed by Clive Lewis OBE DL Founder of Globis Mediation Group, a UK leader in building better relationships in the workplace.

Latest handbook in series published: Difficult Conversations in Dementia has been specifically written to help clinicians have discussions with patients. Please click here to read further information.

CONTEXT

Over the past five years, Difficult Conversations training has become Globis’ bestselling course. In the twenty first century, difficult conversations are everywhere. Whether we’re at home, at work or in a social situation, unwanted subjects can be suddenly raised which demand you to do either one of two things – to tackle the conversation or to dodge it. All of us react in different ways, indeed some may choose to tackle one subject and dodge the next, but all too often in the current climate, those in management positions whose job it is to deal with potentially difficult or damaging situations are dodging more than they are tackling – 72% of them, according to a recent study.

Recently, organisations have been faced with economic uncertainty, budget cuts, rising unemployment, constant change and performance issues. These have increased the need for difficult conversations. The Difficult Conversations Training series has been launched in response to a growing demand from managers requesting help to prepare for situations they are facing. It will help you ensure that you get the outcome you want from a conversation you don’t.

  • About to embark on a discussion about poor performance.

  • About to announce a programme of change.

  • Interested in learning about key techniques that can be used when giving difficult messages

In our work and research in on why people to tackle rather than dodge difficult conversations, we have found that hormone production plays an important role. In neuroscience, we know that the pituitary gland produces the hormone cortisol. Situations that people find stressful, challenging and difficult can result in our bodies producing a higher level of cortisol. The cortisol hormone can have a negative impact on the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. This is the area responsible for executive function and can mean that our thinking is affected. For example, we can become defensive and protective. The effects can last for days and the part of the brain called the hippocampus, which is where our long-term memory is stored, can magnify its impact. Cortisol operates like a mini boost charger.

The more we reflect on the fear of the situation, the more we become inclined to dodge having that conversation. Alternatively, positive interactions produce the oxytocin hormone. Oxytocin helps our ability to collaborate and communicate with others. However, since oxytocin metabolises quicker than cortisol, its effects are less dramatic and sustainable, meaning that we can continue to be a dodger rather than a tackler.

Case Study

Difficult Conversations Survey

In October 2013, we invited managers to take part in our Difficult Conversations Survey to find out why they are dodging rather than tackling tricky subjects. Over 200 managers from across the private, public and third sector took part.

In October 2015, we ran the second of our Difficult Conversation Surveys, with over 500 managers participating. To review the results of this fascinating questionnaire, please download your copy of the report now
