Context

Mediation is being increasingly used as an alternative dispute resolution tool in the NHS. Globis, one of the UK’s longest established providers of workplace mediation services, has launched this programme to equip health professionals with these vital skills. Globis has a track record of working with many health organisations in an acute, community, mental health and CCG settings. Suitable for both Non-Clinicians and Clinicians, this course puts mediation into context following all recent developments in health. The course will take an in-depth look at the concept of mediation and the business case it is built on. Delegates will learn both the theory and practical elements of workplace mediation.  You will leave knowing how to apply the skills used by mediators but equally as important, how to apply them in a health setting.

The Trainer

Clive Lewis OBE DL knows the health sector well. He recently completed two terms as a Non-Executive Director at an £0.5bn Acute Trust. He is a Business Psychologist specialising in employee and industrial relations. He is the author of 14 books, 4 of which are about mediation and conflict resolution. His most recent book ‘How to Master Employment and Workplace Mediation’ was published by Bloomsbury.  He has mediated hundreds of disputes. He was awarded the OBE for his work in the field of mediation and conflict resolution.

Accreditation

The accreditation criteria for this course is in two parts. Firstly, days 4 & 5 are assessed days. Each course participant needs to demonstrate their ability to mediate a dispute by using the skills learned on days 1-3. There are at least 3 hours of observed assessment per delegate. A faculty member observes each session and provides ongoing 1:1 feedback to each delegate as the course progresses.

The second part of the accreditation criteria is written assignments. Globis Mediation Group asks each delegate to submit a written settlement agreement based on one of the case studies from the course. Delegates are also asked to complete an assignment that covers areas such as explaining the business case for mediation, outlining how mediation differs from other forms of dispute resolution and an evaluation of your strengths and development areas from the feedback you received from your faculty team member. Delegates have 14 days from the end of the 5th day of the course to complete written assignments. 

 

Accreditation - Quality Standards

Globis Mediation Group knows, due to feedback received from previous delegates, that this course is challenging and demanding. Course participants who demonstrate the required level of competence through the observed case studies and written assignments will be awarded the National Certificate. The Foundation in Workplace Mediation Skills Certificate is awarded to recognise attendance and participation for course delegates who do not achieve accreditation. It is possible to be re-assessed at a later stage in cases where accreditation is not achieved first time round.

Course Preparation

Course participants are required to undertake around 6 hours of pre-reading before coming on the course. This is for the course and handbook and case study materials. It is important to attend the course with an understanding of the mediation course prior to day 1. It is also important that delegates have a good command of the English language as this will be required for both the practical and written assessments.
