The role of mediation in building better relationships in the workplace
The CIPD, EEF and BIS have been leading a series of initiatives designed to help organisations build better relationships in the workplace. This session will focus on what some of these initiatives have been and will take a look at the impact they are having on places of work.
Speaker Profile - Mike Emmott (CIPD)
Mike's specialist interests are employee relations and employment law. Recent projects include the future of HR and employers' responses to flexible working.
Central to Mike's work is his interest in the way in which industrial and economic changes are affecting employee attitudes and working practices. This has been reflected in research into the psychological contract, and continuing work exploring employers’ experience of managing employee engagement.
Other current work focuses on “smart working”, managing across organisational boundaries, agency working, corporate responsibility and workplace mediation.
Mike has been responsible for inputs to government consultations on a range of employment policy issues. He chaired the DTI HR Advisory Group on Work and Families and was a member of the advisory group that supported Michael Gibbons’ review of dispute resolution.
Before joining the Institute Mike had many years experience in the Employment Department. He was a member of the Employment Service Board and subsequently Deputy Director of the Office of Manpower Economics.
Speaker Profile - Judith Hogarth
Judith is a Principal Advisor with EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, and is a solicitor with a particular interest in mediation. She manages EEF's mediation services, being an accredited mediator herself.
Before joining EEF in 1999, Judith worked as a solicitor in private practice with international firm Salans.
Before qualifying as a solicitor she worked for a civil service trade union, Croner Publications and the Local Government Employers' Organisation.
Speaker Profile - Gail Davis
Gail has worked for BIS for 25 years. She has held a variety of posts, both policy and operational, including sponsoring the chemical industry, dealing with EU anti-dumping complaints and managing the UK interest in European Regional Development Funding. More recently, she has focussed on HR and employment issues, and was part of the Departmental team responsible for pay policy for non-SCS staff, including annual pay negotiations with the Unions. She has been Head of the Dispute Resolution team in Employment Relations Directorate in BIS for the past 2 years, and was involved in taking the Employment Act 2009 through Parliament.
